Privacy Policy

The Ask is an iOS friends-and-family game operated by David Moseley, operating as The Ask (“The Ask,” “we,” “us”). This policy describes what we collect, why we collect it, who sees it, and how to ask us to change or delete it.

The Ask is an iOS friends game for guessing a home’s asking price. We are not a broker or listing service.

If you do not agree with this policy, do not use the app. Using The Ask means you understand this policy. Our Terms of Service at https://gettheask.com/terms also apply.

This policy covers the iOS app The Ask, guest join links we host so a friend can open a showing, the gettheask.com waitlist, and these legal pages.

It does not cover listing websites a host may visit or paste from, Apple’s own apps (Messages, App Store, Sign in with Apple), or a friend’s device.

3. Information we collect

We collect only what we need to run a showing, keep score, find friends you choose, keep the service secure, write you if you join the waitlist, and (if you buy it) honor Ask+.

3.1 You give us

• Account. A username (handle) and display name. You may add an email address or phone number so friends can find you. If you use Sign in with Apple, Apple gives us a stable Apple user id and, if you choose to share it, an email (sometimes a private relay). If you Continue as guest, we still create an account identifier on our servers so you can sit in a showing.
• Profile photo. Optional. If you upload one, we store it with your account so friends recognize you.
• Listing materials a host adds. Photos for a showing, and listing facts the host pastes or confirms (for example a listing URL, city, beds, baths, square feet, and the secret asking price). Guests do not see the asking price or the outbound listing link until reveal.
• Guesses and chat-like game acts. Your dollar guess, lock-in, and any text you type in the game (if we add a caption or report field).
• Waitlist email. If you sign up on gettheask.com, we store that address so we can write you when The Ask is available. We do not sell it or add it to a third-party list.
• Support mail. Whatever you send to privacy@ or legal@, including the address you mail from.

We do not ask for government ID, payment-card numbers, or precise GPS.

3.2 We create when you play

• Gameplay. Who is in a showing, host vs guest, presence (for example thinking / locked in), scores, wins, streaks, over/under badges, and Circle standings.
• Last-seen / heartbeat. When the app is in the foreground we record that you were around, so friends can tell if you are available.
• Invites you start. Room code, join link, and who you seated or texted. If you send a message through Apple Messages, Apple — not us — delivers that message. We store the outstanding invite so the host can see who is coming.
• Device token. If you allow notifications, we store an APNs token so we can send invite, host-away, and come-back alerts.
• Diagnostics. Crash traces and coarse device facts (device type, OS version, app version) when a crash reporter is on.

3.3 From your device, if you allow it

• Contacts. Used on your device to see which of your contacts already have a handle on The Ask, and to let you pick people to invite. We do not upload your full address book to build a directory. We do not sell contacts. We do not message anyone from Contacts except when you send that invite (no select-all blast, no silent SMS). You can refuse Contacts and still play; you can join by room code or a link.
• Photos / photo library / share sheet. A host may pick photos or share a listing into the app. We read the items you choose, not your whole library.
• Notifications. Optional. You can refuse and still play.

3.4 Automatically

• Technical logs. IP address, timestamps, and request paths on our API, used for security, abuse, and uptime.
• Analytics events. Product events (for example opened a showing, locked a guess) if analytics is enabled. See §6.

3.5 From Apple, if you pay

If we offer Ask+ through Apple In-App Purchase, Apple processes the payment. We receive entitlement status (active or not, and an expiration if it is a subscription), not your full card number. Apple’s privacy policy covers the charge itself.

4. How we use information

We do not use listing photos as a public catalog. We do not sell personal information.

Ads. The Ask shows advertising to free users through Google AdMob (Google LLC), including banners in the app. AdMob may collect device identifiers and usage data to serve and measure ads. Ask+ (if you subscribe) is meant to turn those ads off. We do not use your Contacts or listing photos to advertise to other people.

5. Who else sees your information

5.1 Other people in The Ask

• Friends and people in a showing can see your handle, display name, avatar (if any), last-seen, scores, and that you are in the room.
• People in a showing can see the host’s listing photos and, after reveal, the asking price and the listing link the host chose to share.
• A host can see who is coming and who has guessed (not your dollar amount until lock/reveal rules allow it).
• If someone has blocked you, you cannot share a room.

Do not put a street address, a child’s name, or anything you want kept off other people’s phones into a handle, avatar, or photo.

5.2 Service providers (processors)

They may use data only to provide their service to us.

We may add an entitlement helper later so Ask+ status stays in sync; that helper would see purchase status, not your card. We will name it here before it goes live.

5.3 Legal, safety, sale of the project

We may disclose information if we believe we must: law, court order, to stop harm or abuse, or to enforce the Terms. If The Ask is sold or merged, your account data may transfer with it; this policy (or a successor) would still apply until you are told otherwise.

5.4 Sale vs ads

We do not sell personal information for money. Showing AdMob ads is advertising, not a sale of your listing photos or Contacts. App Store privacy labels must list advertising / AdMob. If Ask+ is on, ads should be off for that account.

6. Analytics and crash reports

If Mixpanel is on, it receives events such as “opened a showing” and a Mixpanel distinct id tied to your account. If Sentry is on, it receives crash stacks and device/app version. Either may be off if we have not shipped a token. You cannot turn these off in-app today except by deleting the account or uninstalling. We will add an in-app toggle if we start using them for anything beyond running and fixing the game.

We do not respond to browser Do Not Track on these legal pages. The iOS app is not a website.

7. Listing photos and Blind

• Showing photos. Stored so guests can swipe the gallery. Participants only. We remove them when the showing ends (host ends or host leaves after a finished game).
• Blind pool. If you import a listing into the friends/family Blind pool, we may keep a small copy of those photos and the secret ask so your circle can play that house later. That copy lasts until you remove it or we purge the pool — it is not deleted only because one showing ended.
• We do not scrape listing sites from our servers to build a catalog. A host’s phone may open a listing page; that is the host’s visit, not ours.
• We are not a listing service. Photos and facts come from the host.

8. How long we keep it

We may keep a minimal record after deletion (for example that an id was deleted, or a block) so we can stop fraud and honor legal holds.

9. Your choices

• Edit handle, display name, email, phone, and avatar in the app (You tab).
• Refuse Contacts, Photos, or Notifications in iOS Settings. The core guess loop still works with a room code or a join link.
• Sign in with Apple: manage or stop that Apple ID connection in iOS Settings → Apple ID → Sign in with Apple.
• Notifications: iOS Settings → The Ask → Notifications.
• Delete your account in the app (You → delete account) when that control is shipped. That is the App Store path. Until then — and also as a backup — email privacy@noblefate.com and ask us to delete your account, guesses, and photos. We will ask enough to make sure it is you.
• Waitlist: email privacy@noblefate.com from that address and ask us to remove it.
• Access or correct: same address. Say what you want (copy of your data, a correction, or a deletion).

We aim to respond within 30 days, or sooner if a law that applies to you requires it.

10. Children

The Ask is for people 13 or older. It is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13. If you believe we have, email privacy@noblefate.com. We will delete it.

If you are 13–17, use The Ask only with a parent or guardian’s permission. A parent or guardian may email us to review or delete a minor’s account.

We do not offer a kids mode. We do not ask for a child’s age to advertise.

11. Security

We use HTTPS, access control so only people in a showing can fetch that showing’s photos, and ordinary cloud backups. It is not a promise that no one will ever break in. Do not put secrets in a handle or a photo. Email is not a secure channel; do not send passwords to us.

12. Where data lives

We operate from Tennessee, United States. Our host and processors store and process data in the United States. If you use The Ask from another country, you understand your information will be processed in the United States, which may have different privacy rules than your home.

13. State and other privacy rights

Some U.S. state laws (including California’s CCPA/CPRA and Tennessee’s Information Protection Act) give residents rights to know, access, correct, delete, or opt out of sale or targeted advertising — if the business is large enough to be covered.

Today The Ask is a small friends game. We do not sell personal information and we do not share it for targeted ads. If a law applies to you, email privacy@noblefate.com with the subject Privacy request. We will honor what the law requires. We will not deny you the game, charge you extra, or give you a worse experience for asking.

EEA/UK: we are not offering The Ask as an EU-established service. If you still use it, our lawful bases are: contract (run the game you asked for), legitimate interests (security, analytics to fix the product), and consent (Contacts, notifications, optional email/phone). You may object or withdraw consent by using iOS settings or emailing us.

14. Changes

We will change the “Last updated” date at the top of https://gettheask.com/privacy. If a change is material (for example we turn on ads, or we start selling data — we do not plan to), we will also say so in the app or by email if we have one. Continued use after the new date means you accept the new policy. If you do not, delete your account and uninstall.
